Abstract: Abstract The aim of this chapter is to analyse the main characteristics of the migration flows (temporary or definitive) from Moldova to the European Union countries during the 1990s and the New Millennium. Resorting to statistical data published by the Republic of Moldova and international organisations (Eurostat, World Bank, OECD and IMF), this chapter shows what has happened since the end of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the related independence of the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova. In particular, attention is paid to the origin of migrants (rural or urban areas) and the level of education as well as the reasons pushing them to leave their native country.
