Abstract:
Abstract After giving a general introduction into the field of tree balance, introducing a variety of different available indices and related tree shape statistics, and giving insides into their properties and the software to compute them, we will now shift our focus towards their possible applications. So in this chapter, we will exemplarily present some studies in which (im)balance indices were applied to answer questions of biological, medical, and linguistical relevance. The aim is not just to present possible application fields (which are of course not restricted to the mentioned ones), but, more importantly, a variety of methods on how the aforementioned indices can be used to answer specific questions. The following paragraphs will thus mainly be concerned with the methods used by authors from different fields to drawconclusions from their data.
