Chapter 1 in Sustainability Management in Heritage and Tourism, 2023, pp 3-32 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This opening chapter forms Part I of this monograph and presents its aim and scope in Sect. 1. Section 2 of this chapter introduces three key concepts for this book, namely ‘sustainability’, ‘sustainability management’ and ‘mottainai’. Mottainai is a Japanese word and concept that represents Japan’s traditional view towards sustainability. In Sect. 3, an overview of the heritage sector and the tourism sector is provided independently and then close interrelationships between these two industries are explained. The points discussed in Sect. 2 and 3 work as a foundation for Sects. 4 and 5 that look at theory and practice of sustainability in the heritage and tourism industries across the world and those in Japan respectively. Each of Sects. 4 and 5 covers business ethics, cooperate social responsibility, institutional frameworks for sustainability, and 3Rs (‘reduce’, ‘reuse’ and ‘recycle’). The essences of Sects. 2, 3, 4, and 5 become theoretical frameworks and basic practical examples to develop main discussions in Parts II and III of this monograph. The last section, Sect. 6, illustrates the structure of this monograph.
