A chapter in Handbook of the History and Philosophy of Mathematical Practice, 2024, pp 3135-3150 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we use structuralist semiotics as a framework for analyzing mathematical textual practices. We begin with a short introduction, in which we operationalize certain key aspects of structuralist semiotics. This gives us a tool for semiotic analysis of real mathematical texts. We then illustrate this type of analysis with a concrete text, namely, Über die Composition der binären quadratische Formen by Richard Dedekind.
