A chapter in Handbook of the History and Philosophy of Mathematical Practice, 2024, pp 3047-3071 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Historians and philosophers of mathematics rely primarily on written evidence to discuss the knowledge and practices produced or put into play by actors. The point of this chapter is to offer a critical reflection on the nature of the written evidence on which historians and philosophers qua observers draw to this effect.
