Chapter Chapter 1 in A Guide to Robust Statistical Methods, 2023, pp 1-24 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract An essential component of a basic introductory statistics course is describing classic methods for making inferences about a population of participants or things based on a sample of participants or things. For example, there is the issue of whether a new vaccine has any negative side effects. Based on a sample of one-hundred individuals, what can be said about the likelihood of a negative side effect if all adults are given the vaccine? Imagine there is an interest in the association between the light intensity of a star and its surface temperature. Based on data obtained for 47 stars, to what extent do the data reveal the true association if all stars could be measured?
