What Is Risk?

Chris Heilpern ()

Chapter Chapter 2 in Understanding Risk Management and Hedging in Oil Trading, 2023, pp 3-8 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Trading is about making money, but there is always a risk of losing money. Many things can wrong in a deal from small delays to a Force Majeure that cancels it entirely. Traders have to learn to live with risk because risk-free deals don’t exist. In fact, the job of a trader is not to eliminate risk but to create it and manage it. No risk, no reward. Good trading is about creating acceptable risks that can be managed. In the end, it’s about making more money than you lost and enough to justify being in the business in the first place.
