Abstract:
Abstract This chapter introduces the notion of central bank digital currency (CBDC) and the motives for its establishment. It presents an overview to the current situation of digital currencies worldwide. It also presents the main legal, technical and economic questions related to CBDC and the structure the work will follow in order to answer these questions. The existing forms of electronic and digital money as well as the most commonly named motives will be revealed and discussed in more detail.
