Technical Design
Leo Kriese
Chapter Chapter 2 in Central Bank Digital Currency, 2023, pp 19-39 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the basis for the legal analysis—the technical design of central bank digital currency. It sets out the target group of the digital currency and explains concepts discussed in academia and in practice as to how CBDC can be issued and put into circulation. Furthermore, it examines the innovative and conventional technologies that could underlie these models such as Corda, Blockchain or TIPS. The chapter illustrates possible forms of a payment system with CBDC such as account-based and token-based. Finally, it presents the ECB’s current experiments on the technical design of a digital currency.
