Aspects of Fundamental Rights
Leo Kriese
Chapter Chapter 6 in Central Bank Digital Currency, 2023, pp 81-95 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter focuses on fundamental rights of the end-users. In particular, it presents the recurring fear of a loss of anonymity and privacy in the digital payments’ environment. Mainly, the chapter discusses the influence of central bank digital currency on the protection of end-users’ data. For that, it lays down the legal background of digital payments as well as the legal context of European data protection. In addition, the chapter presents options for a privacy-friendly design of CBDC to dispel the prejudices of ‘transparent citizens’.
