The Malthusians and the Cornucopians
Wim Naudé
Chapter Chapter 2 in Economic Growth and Societal Collapse, 2023, pp 23-37 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter points out that the destiny of human civilization has been a topic of intense debate at least since the end of the eighteenth century. This debate has been characterized, on the one hand, by Malthusians, who take the position that economic growth is limited and that if it overshoots planetary boundaries, this may pose an existential risk, and, on the other hand, Cornucopians, who trust that technological innovation and human ingenuity will be able to overcome any planetary—physical—limits to economic growth.
