A chapter in Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals, 2025, pp 239-246 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter focuses on SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), and the Colombian cacao company Choco4Peace. SDG 16 remains neglected by businesses and management researchers because it is considered external to a company. Therefore, few studies have been conducted concerning how companies work with SDG 16 (Gallo et al., 2023). SDG 16 is for societies to strive to end violent conflict, strengthen institutions at all levels, and promote inclusiveness and justice (UN, 2015). These issues are relevant to companies in all countries, not just those operating in war-torn regions because all societies experience these challenges at some level. SDG 16 is regarded as an enabler for the other SDGs (Sachs et al., 2019) because peace and the rule of law are prerequisites of a stable society and economic development (Acemoglu & Robinson, 2013). Companies may play an important role in supplying resources that support peace and development as well as employment and thus contribute to peace processes (Gallo et al., 2023). Many companies nowadays are focused on the SDGs, but less than 1% of companies that have joined the UNGC clearly address SDG 16 in their sustainability strategies (Reade et al., 2019). There are also few studies on companies and SDG 16 (Gallo et al., 2023). The focus is often on the lobbying of multinationals (MNCs) and public/private partnerships to achieve SDG 16, but insufficient research investigates how a company’s everyday business actions can lead to SDG 16 and peace-building (Silva, 2021).
