Dynamics of Governance Mechanisms in Interorganizational Relationships

Stefano Li Pira and Anna Moretti

Chapter Chapter 3 in Governing Interorganizational Relationships for Innovation, 2024, pp 49-69 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the dynamics of governance mechanisms in interorganizational relationships (IORs) and their adaptation in the face of disruptions. It contributes to the existing literature by exploring the contingent value and efficacy of different governance modes in sustaining collaboration and achieving desired outcomes. It begins with a review of literature on governance mechanisms in IORs, identifying gaps and emphasizing the need for investigating their dynamics. It then explores the factors and processes driving the evolution and adaptation of governance mechanisms during disruptions, highlighting the value of replicating mechanisms, leveraging knowledge, adapting competencies, and asserting power. The contingent value and limitations of replicating governance approaches are discussed. The chapter concludes by summarizing key insights and discussing implications for research and practice, emphasizing the importance of studying governance mechanism dynamics in managing disruptions in IORs.
