Abstract: Abstract Joseph P. Newhouse graduated from Harvard University with both undergraduate and graduate degrees. His primary research field is health economics. This chapter reviews his research contributions to economics and health economics in particular. Among his many accomplishments are his: leadership in the RAND Health Insurance Experiment, which, although conducted in the 1970s and 1980s, is considered a classic study decades later; founding of the Journal of Health Economics and a graduate programme in health policy spanning several schools at Harvard; model of nonprofit hospitals; theoretical analysis of cost-sharing provisions of insurance policies; work on technological change; a book on healthcare pricing issues; and various contributions to the economics of health insurance. Newhouse has received several awards for his contributions to public policy, research and the field of health economics.
