Chapter Chapter 1 in Institutional Change and Performativity, 2024, pp 1-6 from Springer Abstract: Abstract This introductory chapter offers an overview of this book and presents its main ideas and salient features. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book integrates perspectives from institutional theory, social ontology, and performativity. It explores how collectively accepted social norms drive institutional change. Then, using the formulated theoretical framework, it examines the changes in accounting institutions in Japan, emphasizing the imperative for globalization and financialization after the collapse of the economic bubble. This chapter also highlights the dual contribution of the book: unveiling the transformation of Japanese accounting institutions in response to globalization and financialization while introducing a unique theoretical framework that integrates interdisciplinary perspectives. Divided into two parts, the book aims to provide insights into the performative and counterperformative forces that shape institutional change. This comprehensive approach offers a deeper understanding of the intricate interplay between societal dynamics and the evolution of accounting in Japan.
