Chapter Chapter 12 in Advanced Strategic Management, 2024, pp 147-161 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we start with the evaluation of a business portfolio’s health, utilizing qualitative matrices and numerical assessments to identify segments poised for growth, those generating cash, and units of potential concern. The subsequent step involves an assessment of horizontal diversification, to determine if the businesses have appropriate levels of activity overlap and if these activities are as competitive as they should be. The final step entails an evaluation of vertical integration, exploring potential economic benefits and their impact on the company’s expertise and profitability. Conclusions drawn from this analysis determine whether the current level of vertical integration is appropriate and suggest potential enhancements to improve profitability.
