Chapter Chapter 16 in Advanced Strategic Management, 2024, pp 201-215 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we delve into the intricate relationship between macroeconomic cycles and competition. We begin by inquiring about the predictability of recessions. We then explore how recessions impact industries and companies. We analyze the effects of recessions on consumer preferences, employment, credit supply, and bankruptcies, demonstrating how recessions, while temporary, have the potential to permanently alter competitive landscapes. We examine companies’ strategic conundrum: to navigate the immediate challenges of a recession while positioning themselves for lasting competitive advantages. Finally, we provide lessons for businesses seeking to emerge from recessions not just unscathed but stronger, capable of achieving a competitive leapfrog.
