Chapter Chapter 17 in Advanced Strategic Management, 2024, pp 217-231 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The dynamics of competition in natural resource industries, based on commodity products, are fundamentally distinct from those in industries based on the product life cycle. In this chapter, we delve into the unique dynamics of natural resource industries. We outline the intrinsic properties of commodities and explore the various price cycles affecting commodities, differentiating between daily fluctuations, yearly fluctuations, and the decades-spanning supercycle. We illustrate these concepts with historical data on commodity prices. Special emphasis is placed on the supercycle, identifying its drivers through the analysis of supply–demand imbalances on a global scale. We also analyze the relationship between commodity prices and financial derivative markets, and examine the impact of environmental policies on these cycles, offering insights into the strategic and leadership challenges faced by companies in this sector.
