Chapter Chapter 20 in Advanced Strategic Management, 2024, pp 257-273 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we examine the digital revolution, a transformative era that is reshaping competitive dynamics and driving evolutionary processes in business and society. We focus on the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution and the potential for another revolution triggered by the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs). We explore the profound social changes resulting from recent technological advancements, including the pervasive use of global social networks and digital platforms accessed through mobile devices. We discuss the diminishing value of traditional brands, which has shifted to global platforms, and the rise of the sharing economy as a disruptive business model altering traditional capital–labor divisions. Additionally, we highlight the accelerated pace of scalability and the significance of data access and adept navigation of global taxation systems as sources of competitive advantage. To address the challenges posed by ongoing technological innovation, we suggest that companies review customer acquisition strategies, redefine value propositions, and reconsider strategic processes and assets.
