Abstract In his memoir cited above, Lee Kuan YewLee Kuan Yew (LKY), first Prime Minister of an independent SingaporeSingapore, previously a British colony, gives a first-hand account of the spectacular economic transformation of his country, within the span of a generation, from a poor country of fishing communities before Independence in 1965 to an industrialsed economy by the time he was ready to resign as Prime Minister in November 1990. What’s more, by the time he left political office, GDPGDP per capitaGDP per capita (adjusted by purchasing power parity) had surpassed that of the UKUnited Kingdom (UK) by nearly $7000.
