Chapter Chapter 14 in Tourism and Hospitality for Sustainable Development, 2024, pp 233-247 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Digitalisation has created a paradigm shift in how the tourism experience is delivered and managed. This paper presents the multifaceted relationship between digitalisation and sustainable tourism development as outlined in this book and from extant literature. It was evident that digitalisation has increased access to information and changed how stakeholders interact with destinations. This change can be harnessed to minimise the negative impacts of tourism while maximising the benefits, hence promoting sustainability. Tourists can make informed travel choices, including those that reduce their environmental footprint while optimising experiences. Destination managers and businesses can also leverage technology to develop products, optimise resource allocation, improve efficiency, market tourism destinations, and conserve the environment. Communities can also participate in tourism value chains and access previously restricted services, such as banking through digital platforms. Even though technology offers numerous opportunities to support sustainable development, it also comes with various threats that require mitigation. These include data protection and privacy, lack of resources and capacity, and the digital divide. Embracing digital technology ethically and inclusively allows tourism stakeholders to develop new avenues for sustainability, resilience, and inclusive growth for the global tourist industry.
