Abstract Starting with the example of Motown, the well-known record label from Detroit, Michigan, this chapter introduces this book by demonstrating the importance of effective strategies in public, private, and nonprofit organizations for creating public value. It highlights why public and nonprofit organizations should apply strategic management principles and why private firms must pay special attention to their relationships with public and nonprofit organizations in the pursuit of their strategic goals.
