Chapter 2 in An Introduction to Statistical Data Science, 2024, pp 9-74 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides the foundations and the background language of the science of modeling from data, that is, mathematical statistics. We set down the primitive basic ideas and the appropriate technical language which will be used for discussing most problems of data science in this book. We discuss statistical estimation and hypothesis testing in a rather elementary although quite general setting. The specializations to linear models will be discussed in the following chapters.
