Chapter Chapter 2 in From Frechet Differentials to Firing Tables, 2024, pp 67-148 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract After the account given in the preceding section of new material developed by the second wave of ballistic reform, the material dubbed “The New Ballistics,” one naturally wonders about its reception. In this chapter, we look at this question from the point of view of several audiences. We see what influence it had on the course of research for pure mathematicians. We tell the story of how the material was incorporated into military instruction in such institutions as the Coast Artillery School and the Ordnance School of Application. The contributions of practicing mathematicians to the literature of instruction are noted.
