Chapter Chapter 8 in The Syrian Refugee Crisis and Lebanon's Economic Landscape, 2024, pp 127-146 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter critically examines the multifaceted international response to the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon, focusing on aid, diplomatic initiatives, and economic support mechanisms. This chapter assesses the effectiveness and challenges of the international community’s efforts to alleviate the economic and social strains on Lebanon, a country disproportionately affected by the influx of refugees. It delves into the coordination (or lack thereof) between Lebanese authorities, international organizations, and donor countries, scrutinizing the impact of these efforts on Lebanon’s economic stability and infrastructure. Through analysis of aid distribution, investment in public services, and the influence of diplomatic relations on economic support, the chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the external assistance landscape. It offers insights into how international interventions can be optimized to address both immediate needs and long-term resilience, contributing to a nuanced understanding of the global cooperation required in crisis contexts.
