Chapter Chapter 2 in Energia Progresiva, 2024, pp 25-44 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Mexico has a rich history in the energy sector, from its origins as a traditional industry to its latest modernization initiatives. This chapter presents a chronological study of the Mexican Energy Industry, aiming to provide insights into how the sector has evolved to its current state. Starting with a brief overview of the Mexican Energy Sector’s current status, the chapter highlights the key figures, accomplishments, and challenges yet to be tackled. A timeline is then constructed to showcase the significant milestones and influential actors who have shaped the industry over the years. The chapter looks into the historical context of the Mexican Energy Industry, which has been primarily dominated by the state-owned company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). It discusses the industry’s significant reforms over the past decades, allowing foreign investment and private participation in energy exploration, production, and distribution. Additionally, the chapter examines Mexico’s renewable energy targets, which aim to increase the share of renewables in the country’s energy mix. Finally, the chapter highlights the current obstacles faced by the industry, such as low investment in energy infrastructure and increasing demand for energy. It concludes with an overview of what we can learn from the energy history with regard to improving the national electricity outlook, modernizing the energy grids, enhancing investment in renewable energy, and encouraging private investment in the sector. The chapter aims to provide valuable insights into the history of the Mexican Energy Industry for decision-makers, researchers, academics, and the public.
