Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the obstacles encountered by the MENA Region, such as water scarcity, desertification, and high energy consumption. It then delves into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) intersects with development in this context paving the way for a conversation about how AI can provide solutions. The chapter also looks at how AI is used across sectors to promote sustainability, including managing renewable energy sources improving grid efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions in agriculture and the energy sector (Vinuesa et al. in Nature Communications 11:1–10, 2020). An in-depth analysis is provided on the impacts of AI itself stressing the importance of creating AI solutions that are not just effective but also environmentally friendly. The discussion extends to government policies and international partnerships that foster AI-driven sustainability efforts highlighting cases from the region. Additionally, challenges related to implementing AI for sustainability are addressed, such as constraints, data accessibility issues, and the necessity for collaboration, across sectors.
