Elite Factionalism and the First Republic’s Downfall, 1922–1930

Chapter Chapter 11 in Brazilian Agricultural Development, 1890–1950, 2025, pp 211-243 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Efforts to support diversified agriculture in the Northeast and extreme South during the final years of the 1920s were less successful than in the Center-South. The Northeast suffered from meager resources and the vagaries of climate affecting its cotton cultivation, while ranchers in the South found competition difficult for sale of their traditional product with the restoration of normal trade conditions. Segments of local elites in both regions became dissatisfied with national policies, attributing their economic problems to favoritism for the Center-South, especially São Paulo.
