Abstract: Abstract It has been recognised that natural resource availability is one of the major determinants of development around the world. Some countries in the global south rely heavily on such resources to attain better growth paths. In contrast, Nigeria, with the largest population in Africa, is rich in natural resources, which could enable the country’s sustainable development. The economy has become a monocultural system, highly dominated by crude oil; other natural sectors are underutilised in spite of the presence of natural resources. Though Nigeria remains relatively richly endowed, its economy is still hugely dependent on imports of industrial inputs. In effect, this has made Nigeria’s journey towards industrialisation complex and placed the country at a structural disadvantage.
