Chapter Chapter 11 in Restoring America's Rivers, 2025, pp 331-358 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Two American whitewater rivers (the Housatonic in Connecticut and the Rogue in Southern Oregon) illustrate the attraction of whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing for salmon and steelhead. The Housatonic is an old industrial river that is close to the New York City metropolitan area, and that is being cleaned of industrial pollution. The Rogue is a clean flowing rugged river of Western character that is essential for the preservation and restoration of salmon and steelhead. Both rivers are heavily used by recreators who form a foundation of the movement for dam removal and overall river restoration.
