Chapter Chapter 1 in The Political Economy of Contemporary Human Civilisation, Volume I, 2025, pp 1-27 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the evolution of Homo sapiens and the profound impact of human cognitive and social developments on the environment and society. It explores how advanced problem solving, language, and cooperation enabled humans to innovate in technology, agriculture, and culture, transforming social structures and economies. However, this creativity also facilitated destructive capabilities, from early weaponry to modern technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and nuclear arms. The Anthropocene is characterized by human-induced climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, underscoring the dual-edged nature of innovation. Emerging technologies, such as AI and biotechnology, offer solutions to global challenges but pose significant risks if mismanaged. The chapter highlights how governance, economics, and environmental policies must adapt to the accelerating pace of technological change. It emphasizes the ethical imperative to balance innovation with sustainability, ensuring that advancements enhance equity and global cooperation rather than exacerbate inequalities or ecological harm.
