Chapter Chapter 5 in The Political Economy of Contemporary Human Civilisation, Volume II, 2025, pp 141-181 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores the history, advancements, and future potential of space exploration and travel. It traces humanity’s early rocketry milestones, highlighting the foundational work of Tsiolkovsky, Goddard, and Oberth, and pivotal achievements like the Apollo Moon landings and the International Space Station (ISS). The chapter examines how space exploration has evolved, with a focus on cutting-edge technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), biotechnology, quantum computing, robotics, and nuclear fusion. AI facilitates autonomous decision-making in spacecraft and rovers, enhancing navigation and data analysis for distant missions. Biotechnology addresses human health challenges in space through gene editing and regenerative medicine, enabling sustainable long-term habitation. Quantum computing promises breakthroughs in mission logistics, real-time data processing, and propulsion systems. Robotics plays a critical role in constructing extra-terrestrial infrastructure and conducting hazardous tasks. Nuclear fusion, once realized, could revolutionize propulsion and energy systems, enabling faster and more efficient interplanetary travel. The chapter emphasizes collaboration between governmental agencies and private enterprises, such as SpaceX, to democratize access to space. These advancements, coupled with the ongoing efforts of programs like Artemis and Mars colonization initiatives, bring humanity closer to becoming an interplanetary species. The chapter concludes by underscoring the transformative potential of these technologies to redefine space exploration and human civilization.
