Abstract: Abstract This chapter aims at providing a general overview of the role of tourism in the economic system and to define the issue of sustainability, focusing on how the evolution of the relationship between growth, tourism and the environment has progressively changed. In addition to presenting a systemic vision, the chapter will devote particular attention the way in which the effects of tourism on the economic system and the environment can be expressed in advanced economies and in developing countries.
