Chapter Chapter 1 in AI for Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Applications, 2025, pp 1-17 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The manufacturing industry is being redefined by Artificial Intelligence (AI) application by reshaping production processes, supply chainsprocesses, supply chain, and enterprise operations. This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to AI in manufacturing, tracing its evolution from early automation in the 1970s to today’s intelligent, interconnected systems. The chapter explores key milestones such as the integration of machine learning, Industry 4.0 advancements, and the rise of industrial IoT, which have enabled AI applications like predictive maintenance, quality control, and adaptive automation. The chapter discusses the significant market growth of AI, projected to reach $826.7 billion by 2030, alongside a detailed analysis of adoption trends, competitive dynamics, and the role of startups and technology leaders in driving innovation. Additionally, it addresses challenges like data accessibility, AI model transparency, and legacy system integration that have historically hindered adoption. Key AI applications enhancing manufacturing efficiency, quality, and sustainability are examined, alongside actionable insights into evaluating Return on Investment (ROI)Return On Investment (ROI) through pilot projects and strategic metrics. The chapter provides a forward-looking perspective on AI’s potential to further revolutionize manufacturing, positioning it as an essential tool for competitiveness and innovation in a data-driven industrial landscape.
