Chapter Chapter 18 in The Historical Evolution of International Business, 2025, pp 343-359 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Women in the Academy of International Business (WAIB) was founded in 2001 as a networking group for women faculty and doctoral students in AIB. This chapter reviews WAIB’s early years based on historical emails and documents, takes stock of the organization’s achievements, and concludes with a look forward to the future. WAIB has grown from an idea shared with 20 women in 2001 to nearly 1200 members, 30% of AIB’s membership, in 2024. The organization’s activities have grown from networking at AIB conferences to, among other roles, fostering research and education on gender and diversity issues, mentoring women doctoral students, and providing travel grants to women scholars in developing countries. Looking ahead, I recommend that WAIB make an explicit commitment to helping the United Nations address the wicked problem of SDG 5, Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls. WAIB could, for example, focus on addressing SDG 5 with respect to women engaged in international business education and research. The chapter is dedicated to the many WAIB members, all over the world, who have over the years volunteered their time, led by example, and created this successful global shared interest group that brings together and celebrates women in the Academy of International Business.
