Chapter Chapter 20 in The Historical Evolution of International Business, 2025, pp 383-391 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, Manning provides an insightful and highly informative outsiders’ view on the international business field. His account is not just a highly readable discussion of international business, but also an instructive overview of the history and evolution of academic disciplines more generally. My commentary supplements his analysis by arguing that international business as an academic field evolved not just through research but also by developing education capital. Teaching cases, often written in cooperation between authors based in different countries, led to the formation of elaborate institutional as well as personal networks that significantly shaped the field’s development.
