A chapter in Handbook of Health Services Evaluation, 2025, pp 191-205 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The need to capture the social, economic, and environmental value of health services is imperative to enable sustainable, people-centered systems. This is evident in the face of global health challenges, resulting in deteriorating population health, growing pressure on services and widening health gaps. Historically, “value for money” approaches, such as cost-effectiveness, have driven decision-making and budget allocation, taking into account only the direct financial returns of a service. Looking forward, it is essential to capture the “added” social value, including benefits to individuals, the wider community and the planet. This chapter introduces the concept of measuring social value, through Social Return on Investment (SROI). The main stages of the SROI methodology are outlined and its applicability alongside other evaluation and assessment processes and frameworks is discussed.
