A chapter in Handbook of Health Services Evaluation, 2025, pp 373-389 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract There is growing recognition of how trauma affects health and wellbeing. To support the populations they serve, some public health and healthcare organizations are introducing trauma-informed approaches, and there are several frameworks describing key principles. Programs vary in how trauma-informed health services are implemented, affecting evaluation approach, tool development, and reception. Evaluating trauma-informed programs is also nascent, with metrics and approaches still being tested. Additionally, evaluation has historically perpetuated trauma by operating in a top-down way, using data punitively, or not sharing results with participants. This tendency emphasizes the importance of evaluating trauma-informed programs in a trauma-informed manner. This chapter provides an overview of the research on evaluating trauma-informed programs and describes the principles of trauma-informed approaches and their application to trauma-informed evaluation of health services.
