A chapter in Handbook of Health Services Evaluation, 2025, pp 451-469 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides an overview of community engagement, why it’s important, and its criticality to evaluative processes. The history of the interaction of community engagement in evaluation and research practices will be discussed, including participatory evaluation, empowerment evaluation, and culturally Responsive Evaluation that centers on community, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice pursuits. We will also explore how to improve health-service evaluation practices using strategies like relationship-building, reflexivity, and adaptability. We also inquire how current trends in health-based interventions, such as capacity building and cultural humility, should be reflected in the evaluative process, and what this looks like practically for evaluative methodologies. The chapter further connects these concepts to the health field through case studies.
