Chapter Chapter 5 in Qatar’s Role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, 2025, pp 79-103 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter delves into Qatar’s active involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and its profound economic implications. Qatar’s participation in the BRI holds great significance as it seamlessly aligns with the nation’s ongoing endeavors to diversify its economy and achieve its geopolitical goals. This chapter meticulously explores the extent of Qatar’s engagement in the BRI, encompassing its substantial investments, collaborative agreements, and cooperative ventures. It also sheds light on Qatar’s interactions with key nations and regions participating in the BRI. Furthermore, this chapter accentuates the pivotal role of Qatar in the BRI. As a relatively small nation boasting vast natural resources, Qatar keenly recognizes the myriad advantages that come with participating in this transformative initiative. These advantages encompass expanded market access, enhanced economic diversification, and comprehensive infrastructure development. Qatar’s participation in the BRI also assumes paramount importance in the broader context of the nation’s strategic ambitions. The BRI presents a unique opportunity for Qatar to fortify its regional connectivity and advance its vision of a more interconnected Middle East. Qatar’s active engagement in the BRI has the potential to foster stronger relations with other BRI participant countries, most notably China, a prominent global powerhouse and a crucial partner in Qatar’s strategic landscape.
