Abstract: Abstract The workflow and the setup to simulate transient operations of a pump-turbine are investigated and improved within the scope of this study. A first simulation of a load increase with the guide vane angle opening from 6 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ to 15 $$^{\circ }$$ ∘ is carried out to identify the validity of the workflow and numerical setup. The results indicate the necessity to correct the measured guide vane angles that are used within the simulation. Additionally, a small initial timeframe of a startup is used to further investigate the numerical setup. The convergence criteria for the mesh deformation, the correction of the measured guide vane angle, the frequency of the remeshing process as well as inlet and outlet boundary conditions are investigated and improved.
