Translating Guamán Poma’s Yupana as a Multiplication
Cinzia Florio
Chapter Chapter 8 in The Mathematical Enigma of Guamán Poma’s Yupana, 2025, pp 61-72 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we build a logical path to deciphering Guamán Poma’s yupana. First, we evaluate all the available material on the customs and traditions of the Incas. Then, we use a technical approach to produce an analysis that is as objective as possible. The result is convincing and self-demonstrative. The result also shows how to apply multidisciplinary data successfully. This observation is perhaps even more important than the decipherment itself for the future of archaeology and the history of mathematics and technology of ancient peoples.
