Chapter Chapter 6 in The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East, 2026, pp 165-199 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract While preferential trade agreements are usually assessed by their effects on bilateral trade relations, and as pointed out by Kanafani (2001), in regard to the Israeli-Palestine economic relations this should not be considered the sole appropriate criterion. Indeed, it is through the lens of political economy that economic change, and furthermore economic policy, should be assessed. Notwithstanding the gradualism and the inherent limitations on Palestine’s access to resources of power, the analysis offered in this chapter aims to explore whether, within this framework, the Paris Protocol could have been instrumental in encouraging the Palestinian statehood capacity potential, as declared in its preamble. In order to accommodate that, this chapter offers a political-economy analysis exploring the role of the Protocol within the peace process institution.
