Chapter Chapter 4 in Future of Business in Asia, 2025, pp 71-81 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides a review of the scholarship of family business in Asia with future research propositions. The goal of this chapter is to synthesise existing research with the bibliometric analysis and Theory-Context-Characteristics-Methodology (TCCM) framework and draw research propositions. Future researchers may invite a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-oriented theory (Proposition 1) and a consumer-facing theory (Proposition 2). Research contexts can be broadened to include family-run business entities (e.g., foundation) other than a business (Proposition 3) and the dark side of the family business (Proposition 4). Further investigation can be dedicated to examining the variances among family business clusters grounded in different cultures as business performance drivers (Proposition 5) and the formation and development of differences from process-oriented approaches (Proposition 6) with more sophisticated study designs, including unstructured (Proposition 7) and longitudinal (Proposition 8). This contribution aims to advance scholarship by identifying research gaps and establishing consensus on research priorities.
