A chapter in Missing Voices in Economics, 2026, pp 247-254 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This conclusion discusses the evidence presented in Missing Voices and highlights the persistent gender disparities in the economics profession. Economics continues to lag behind other social sciences and STEM fields in achieving gender equity despite several initiatives to address the leaky pipeline. This chapter summarizes the book’s strategies for addressing the leaky pipeline, including incorporating gender into economic theory and addressing unequal institutions. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are also critical for promoting equity in economics. The chapter concludes by analyzing areas for future research, including the impact of high school economics education and the need for more inclusive understandings of gender. Systemic changes at every level of the profession are needed to address the leaky pipeline and ensure that the field of economics becomes more representative, equitable, and inclusive.
