A chapter in Behavioral Cybersecurity and Ethical AI in Relational Economics Context, 2026, pp 301-323 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Over the last two decades, trade in Africa, like trade globally, has undergone a transformation driven by digital technologies. However, while information and communication technologies have positively impacted trade facilitation and regional trade flows, they have also introduced cybersecurity threats, internet fraud, scams, and privacy issues that can disrupt international trade. Adapting artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance trade-related cybersecurity is imperative. This paper explores the potential of AI in strengthening cybersecurity for regional and global trade flows in Africa. The paper presents a case for the potential of AI to facilitate safe and secure international trade transactions in Africa through real-time threat detection, enhanced risk management, reliable and comprehensive data and market analysis, and improved e-commerce activities. Furthermore, the findings underscore the need for investment in digital infrastructure, including high-speed internet, cloud computing resources, and data centres, as well as reforms to the regulatory frameworks that support the use of AI. Beyond providing infrastructure, digital legislation can be leveraged to enhance cybersecurity measures and data privacy.
