Chapter 6 in Positive Leadership, 2026, pp 109-129 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The public sector is simultaneously affected by austerity, change, an aging workforce, and recruitment difficulties. Therefore, it is posited that positive leadership will engender new perspectives on the development and management of occupational well-being in the public sector. This qualitative research explored how public sector leaders and supervisors describe the support of positive leadership training for leadership development. The data consisted of questionnaire responses from 31 leaders and supervisors who participated in leadership training as part of a positive leadership development project, which were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. According to the findings, the elements of the training that supported leadership development were strengths-based, self-reflection, enthusiasm, and peer support. The findings highlight the importance of identifying and using strengths, both in one's own leadership and in leading the strengths of employees.
