Abstract: Abstract “Sailing World Champion, Founder & Managing Director”, the career of Johann “Hans” Spitzauer is remarkable in several ways. First, he took part in five Olympic Games and is one of the most successful sailors in Austria (Finn and Star classes). He was recognized as the nation’s leading Finn sailor during the first three Olympic Games of his career (1988, 1992, and 1996) and achieved his best result at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, narrowly missing the podium with a fourth-place finish. Beyond the Olympics, Spitzauer was considered one of the most accomplished Finn sailors globally (World Champion 1995 in Melbourne) in the early to mid-1990s, earning a full set of medals—gold, silver, and bronze—at both the Finn Gold Cup and the Finn European Championships (two times gold). Second, his career can be marked as prototype of a successful dual career, with foci on sport, studies, and work (Ramos et al., 2022; Stambulova & Wylleman, 2015) and a successful sport-career transition of an Olympic athlete (Conzelmann & Nagel, 2003; Wylleman, 2019). Third, and more in detail, it is a prototype for an entrepreneurial career in sport (Hindle et al., 2021; Ramos et al., 2022; Ratten, 2015). And fourth, due to his long-lasting dual-career period of nearly three decades, his career highlights relevant mutual spillover effects between the fields of sport, occupation, and innovation.
