Abstract This chapter describes the incorporation of the Indian princely states into the Union of India and, in this context, the accession of the state of Jammu and KashmirJammu and Kashmir to India. It describes how the division of Jammu and Kashmir into a Pakistan-administered and an Indian-administered part came about. It discusses events in Indian Jammu and Kashmir since 1947 and narrates how they gave birth to a series of crises in the state.
