Chapter 7 in Board Gender Diversity and Critical Mass Theory, 2026, pp 167-211 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In Tables 7.1 and 7.2, we set out an analysis of the 171 journal articles, from which it can be seen that 150 (87.7%) of the articles show strong support for the critical mass theory, 7 (4.1%) show a lack of support, while 14 (8.2%) show some support for critical mass theory but not significant. An analysis of the four main topics (although some authors bridge these topics in their study) shows: (1) Corporate finance (66 articles, 59 positives, two rejected, and five mixed), (2) Corporate governance (86 articles, 76 positives, five rejected, and five mixed), 3. (3) Corporate innovation (four articles, three positive and one mixed), and (4) Corporate risk (15 articles, 13 positives and two mixed). The analysis shows that much of the earlier research has focused on corporate governance issues and less on financial matters. Overall, these results give compelling support for the critical mass theory.
